I love an outdoor art show!
I know, I'm the only one and most artists loathe an art show
It always rains
It is always too hot
It is always too cold
But I love meeting and talking with all the people who come in my tent and the other artists around my tent.
I won't try to convince you to a show as much as I do, but I will give you all my best prep tips.
Start Early
You will need a tent. Most art shows require a white tent and I found mine at Sam's Club for about $170. So far, after 4 years, it is holding up well, and I have no complaints about it.
After my 1st year of trying to piece together some kind of wall structure - wire grids, lattice work, I splurged and got the professional walls from Flourish. They are worth every penny because they set up fast, take down fast and look very clean and professional. Mine were about $800. Place your order with Flourish early because it takes them about 6-8 weeks to make and ship your walls. They are a small family owned and run company and spring is their busiest time!
I, always bring someone to help me - usually my sister. But, last year, for one of my shows she couldn't make it. I was able to put the tent up, set up the walls and everything else that needed to be done, all by myself! And I know there are several artists who are always without help, so don't let that stop you!
Plus, everyone is so friendly and, even though I have help, other artists will check on you and ask if you need anything!
And that's another thing - when Amy and I finish setting up my tent, we will walk around and see if anyone needs help. Karma.
Plan your set up
Think about how you will hang and/or display your work.
I've seen people design their placements on excel sheets!
I am not that organized! You do need a variety of work. Some people will want really large work and some will want small pieces. People really want to support you so make sure you have some easy to buy options; prints, notecards, ornaments, small works.
I am always trying to simplify my set up and bring less!
Although I have an SUV, it is one of the smaller models, so the less "stuff" I need to bring the more room for paintings!
